Readings

The Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador hosts, and collaborates with other organizations to facilitate a variety of readings series throughout the province.

Spring Tides Reading Series

A reincarnation of WANL’s monthly reading series, the Spring Tides Reading Series hosts reading events featuring local writers across the province.

In 2011 we enjoyed readings from award-winning writers Maura Hanrahan, Samuel Thomas Martin, Kevin Major, Leslie Vryenhoek, Patrick Carroll, Marion Quinton-Brake, Tara Manuel, and Stephanie McKenzie. Spring Tides Readings for 2011 took place in Corner Brook, Gander, and St. John's.

Interested in reading in the 2012 Spring Tides Reading Series? Please see our current Call for Expressions of Interest for readers and local volunteer organizers!

The Come From Away Reading Series

For the Come From Away Reading Series, WANL asks three Newfoundland writers, “If you were to invite a writer from another province to come read on the Rock, who would it be?” They tell us who they want and we invite them!

For the 2011 series, Newfoundland's Chad Pelley invited Cape Breton-born, Edmonton-based Lynn Coady (October 9 in St. John's and October 10 in Corner Brook), Agnes walsh invited Thailand-born, Toronto-based Souvankham Thammavongsa (November 6 in St. John's and November 7 in Corner Brook) and Russell Wangersky has invited BC-based Steven Galloway, who will read in St. John's and Corner Brook in early 2012.

For the inaugural CFA Reading Series in 2010, Randall Maggs invited Nino Ricci, Michael Crummey invited Miriam Toews, and Lisa Moore invited Robert Lalonde.

WANL acknowledges the Canada Council for the Arts for their financial support for this project.

Just Before Dinner Reading Series

The popular Port Rexton reading series Just Before Dinner is a collaboration between the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador and Fishers' Loft Inn. All Just Before Dinner readings take place from 6 - 7 pm in the Inn's beautiful reading room. Admission to the reading is free. If you'd like to stay for dinner, dinner reservations are recommended.

The 2011 series featured Leslie Vryenhoek (September 10), Craig Francis Power (September 17), Kate Evans (September 24), and Bill Rowe (October 1).

WANL and Fishers' Loft Inn look forward to bringing this series back for an eighth season in the fall of 2012.
