Hubert J. Squires
14 Solomons DrungPortugal Cove-St. Philips, NL, A1M 2C5 Canada Email: hjsltd@nl.rogers.com Hubert was born in 1918 and brought up at St. Philips where he lives now, but he has lived at St. John's where he worked for 22 years with the Fisheries Research Board of Canada (now DFO) as a research scientist and five years with the NL Department of Fisheries as Director of Planning. At an earlier date (1942) he worked one year in the Arctic (Baffin Island) as a paramedic with the United States Engineer Dept. and crossed the Arctic Circle once. He and his family also lived ten years in the Tropics (five for FAO in Colombia as a biologist and acting director of a fisheries project, two years in Fiji as Chief Fisheries Officer and three in Barbados for CIDA) and crossed the Equator several times especially while fishing for shrimps in the Caribbean and Pacific. A marine biologist now retired he writes only for recreation. Three books on Mythology: Mythology for You: about purpose in the universe and on religion, Survival Stories from Mythology and Meaning in some Symbols from Mythology; and a children's book Told and Untold Tales (including some Russsian folklore), and a 190-page book of original drawings of Shrimps, Lobsters and Crabs from the East and Arctic Coasts of Canada. He is presently working on a children's book: The World of Squids"and another book on mythology: A Present Day Look at Myths. But as a marine biologist he has written a 530-page book on Decapod Crustacea of the Atlantic Coast of Canada and a 160-page treatise on Decapod Crustacean Larvae of Ungava Bay. Also 65 peer-reviewed scientific papers on Shrimps, Lobsters, Squids and Bivalves (Arkshells and tropical Oysters) and has named six new species of decapod crustaceans. In his early career as a teacher Hubert lived in Newfoundland outports: Sallys Cove, Bellburns, Cul de Sac West and Cooks Harbour. Teacher training three years at Memorial University College. His further education includes a BSc and MSc at McGill, a PhD at Durham and DSc at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He is a Fellow of the Zoological Society of London and a Fellow of the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists. He was an Adjunct Professor of Biology in 1982 at MUN. He has supervised student theses for 15 Licentiate degrees (University of Bogota) and five MSc degrees at MUN. Hubert is married to Hope Starks MA and they have three children and one grandson now adult. |
